So this year we signed up with Ocean Time Marine whose ‘semi-automated system’ is touted as: “featuring an easy-to-use and intuitive process to help you take control of your safety systems, write your own SMS and keep all your safety documents organised. The system is designed for commercial fishing, shipping, fishing charter, work-boats, ferries, commercial yachts and charter yachts.” And it is. For me I’ve found transferring our previously bloated SMS to the framework is a comparatively easy process. It’s worth the money for us for the time and resources saved on our end. You do still need to tailor the system to your own situation, but the framework allows that part quite easily and guides you through exactly what needs to be included.

I purchased this a week ago, it took me about 2 hours to complete. It’s contains all the 12 elements and complies with the AMSA Part E. I added about 6 of the procedures and downloaded the risk assessment as well as the flip charts and the log book page. I needed a SMS to comply for my commercial fishing and fishing charter business, and this has saved me a heap of time and money. I’d definitely recommend it if you don’t have the time or the knowledge to write it.

I am delighted with the SMS template I purchased but more particularly with the back-up service I received. Even on a Sunday!! When I first received the PDF template I found it quite daunting but my fears were quickly put to rest and a really good SMS was completed in a matter of a few days.

We have 2 boats that take around 40 – 80 passengers in Western Australia. 2C vessels. I have a 15m Passenger Charter boat. In 1D, 2C Survey. I have been using the Ocean Time Marine template since February 14. We use the SMS as a crew induction tool as well. They sent us a nice log book and safety flip chart which is useful as well.

Began to do some homework on a SMS I had to comply with, and have completed for AMSA. Turned out, when I had looked on GOOGLE, and on the AMSA Website to look at the SMS sample I began to see it was a large job and not an easy one. I started to call operators to gain more info, then checked out Oceantimemarine.com, the best call I made….! I had left a message, and in no time a contact email followed up by a phone call shortly after put my mind to ease. A small fee and a quick download, I was on my way with creating my own SMS. The team were a great help, nothing was too hard for them they even had checked my progress and also added a few pictures into my SMS set up. I have now sent my SMS to AMSA with no problems they have commented on a great sucsess. If you are wanting top service, need any help or guidence along the way these guys are the real deal to go with. Rather than have a management company develop a safety management system, we decided to take control of our own safety and use the ocean time marine SMS software, not only was it simple and easy to use, it has become a very useful document on board. We make use of the checklists and permits to work on the iPad and no longer pay fees to a management company for a document we don’t control.

Being based in South Africa, many of our systems are a little archaic, having the Ocean Time Marine SMS is incredibly helpful & beneficial to running a successful fleet safely.
